Take a walk with us, back in time
The Feathers Hotel in Helmsley, a delightful fusion of Yorkshire heritage and hospitality. While it may not boast centuries as an inn, its story is no less captivating.
The hotel opened its doors in 1959, the vision of Jack and Peggy Feather, who transformed two historic properties into a welcoming retreat.
The main building, dating back to the mid-17th century, had long served as the residence for Helmsley’s medical practitioners, including the esteemed Dr. Francis Porter, who served the community until his passing in 1933 at the age of 93.
Adjacent to this was Thorpe’s Cottage, home to three generations of market-toll collectors from the Thorpe family. In 1963, the Feathers expanded with the addition of the Pickwick Bar, renowned for its craftsmanship by Bob Cartwright, grandson of the famed ‘Mouseman’ Robert Thompson. The bar features the distinctive carved mouse trademark, a testament to Yorkshire’s rich woodworking tradition.
Today, the Feathers Hotel stands as a Grade II listed building, offering 25 individually styled rooms, hearty Yorkshire fare, and a warm welcome to all who pass through its doors. A true embodiment of Helmsley’s enduring charm.
